Summary/Abstract: The Iconic Image of Mother as Family Memory Keeper in Novels by Jean Rouaud and by Petru Dumitriu. This study is focused on the idea of motherhood and its implications in children’s and adults’ lives. A Mother has to be, seemingly at least, the very image of love and devotion as well as the keeper of the whole memory in her family’s existence. We will highlight two extremely different ways of assuming motherhood, one under the features of a cruel and possessive fictional mother in Petru Dumitriu’s novel Property and Possession, the other, a nonfictional one, represented in flesh and blood by the French prize-winner Jean Rouaud. We will see how the iconic image of Mother can change the course of life of her family and lead either to isolation and despair or to some restrictive rules of literary aesthetics.
