Jewish Doctors and Barber-Surgeons in Zamość Entail in 17th and 18th Century

Summary/Abstract: When he set up the city of Zamość and the Zamość Entail (Ordynacja Zamojska), Chancellor Jan Zamoyski saw to it that the citizens had guaranteed medical care. This goal was served by importing doctors from other towns, training new ones at the Chancellor’s expense and providing conditions for free practicing of medicine to doctors and other medical personnel regardless of nationality or religion. Thanks to that policy of the Chancellor and his successors, many Jews engaged in medicine in Zamość and throughout the Entail. These were both trained physicians having a doctor’s degree and lower-rank personnel, the barber-surgeons. Some of them were on the payroll of the Zamość court, thanks to which a large proportion of the Entail’s subjects were entitled to free health care in the 17th and 18th century.
