Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present study is to analyse comparatively two characters belonging to two different literary, socio-cultural and historical epochs: Don Quixote and Ignatius Reilly, the latter being the protagonist of John Kennedy’s Toole novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. The study organizes around the following dimensions of analysis: the relation between the protagonists’ somatic types and their psychological attributes, their idleness as a central characteristic which paradoxically, later on, will unleash the explosiveness of their actions, the ideals and beliefs endorsed by the two heroes, as well as the manifestation forms of the conflict between the protagonists’ mission in the world and the opacity of a perverted and shallow society unable to gain insight into the profoundness of their soul.
