Summary/Abstract: When Lithuania joined the European Union, many possibilities for various activities were opened and their success depends on the knowledge of the foreign and firstly the English language, which became one of the most significant factors, which help to communicate with the world, to exchange information and ideas in the spheres of economic, culture and science. It helps to get acquainted with other cultures, to travel, etc. To find out how the importance of the English language is appreciated by the future teachers, 196 students of I–III courses of different specialties (day-time studies) were questioned. According to the data, 91,3 % of respondents maintain that the English language course is necessary; 64,8 % of the students believe that the success of their professional activity depends on the knowledge of the English language; 30 % of the students affirm having relationships with foreigners. The research also revealed the shortcomings of the standpoint towards the English language. Some students overestimate their knowledge of the English language, read English too little, during the English language lessons are very passive, etc. The recommendations how to make the motivation of the English language more active are revealed in the article.
