Compulsory voting

Summary/Abstract: This article addresses the issue of compulsory voting, i.e. the electoral system in which voters are obliged by law to participate in elections. It discusses the rationale and justification for the introduction of the compulsory system as well as selected issues related to its functioning (exemptions, measures of enforcement, sanctions for non-participation and their impact on electoral turnout). The article concludes with the arguments for and against compulsory voting.
