Summary/Abstract: Although one could find traces of the agony and turmoil of the 19th century in Ghalib, he hardly ever wrote directly about his time or contemporaneous events and developments. When he did so, it was in his prose, particularly in his letters but not in his poetry. He lived in his times as deeply, humanly and truly as any sensitive person could have. But his cosmic vision, his powerful apprehension of the angst of being and his sense of loneliness have a truly timeless dimension. Ghalib is not a poet of history, but of eternity.
