Summary/Abstract: In the view of many political analysts and social scientists, the era of the Cold War and ideological conflict has given way to an era of ethnic wars and cultural conflicts. In this respect, religion played a complex role, serving both as an inspiration for violence and source of a growing number of conflicts around the world, as well as an important tool for conflict resolution. Resurgent religion, ethnic conflict and religious identity are also an important concern in political and scholarly debates about immigration, security, and integration across the Western world. Religion is important because, as a central part of many individuals’ identity, any threat to one’s beliefs is a threat to one’s very being. However, the relationship between religion and conflict is in fact a complex one, some of its features making it susceptible to being a real source of conflict and, in this context, security threat.
