Summary/Abstract: After the Second World War, Sartre developed his theory of literary commitment. This theory is based on the notion of the responsibility of the writer. Sartre redefines this notion in the context of the purges of the intellectuals who were accused of treason for collaborating with the enemy during the German Occupation in France. In contradistinction to the penal definition of responsibility, which is anchored in a national framework, Sartre proposes a more universal conception, tightly related to his philosophy of freedom.
