Summary/Abstract: Communication in natural language between two participants, a and B, is considered, where a’s communicative goal is that his/her partner B will make a decision to take an action t. a argues how useful, pleasant, etc. it would be for B to do t, in order to guide B’s reasoning into the desirable direction. theoretical considerations are supported with an analysis of Estonian spoken human-human dialogues. First, calls of clients to travel agencies were studied where a travel agent can use various arguments in order to make a client book a trip. However, the analysis demonstrates that clients are primarily looking for information; argumentation occurs in a small number of dialogues. secondly, calls of salesclerks of an educational company offering training courses to different organizations were analysed. the salesclerks, unlike the travel agents, try to persuade clients emphasizing the usefulness of this or that training course. nevertheless, clients seldom agree to take a course. In most cases, the decision will be postponed. our further aim is to build a dialogue system where the computer can perform a’s or B’s role and, interacting with the user in Estonian, will follow the norms and rules of human-human communication.
