Summary/Abstract: The present text is the first part of a larger research on the anthroponymical system of the village of Pirgovo, Rousse region. Its aim is to analyze the earliest layer, which can be reconstructed, of the composition of the settlement’s nominal system through the available data from the two oldest (known at the present) church chronicles (registers), kept at the Rousse State Archive, from the death records of the church’s registers, kept at the “Holy Epiphany’’ Church in the village, and from the Ottoman documents, which contain names of residents of Pirgovo. Observations were made on the frequency of use of the personal names, the traditions of choosing a name, the formation and meaning of the family names, the composition of the nominal system, as well as on some of the processes of dropping out and the appearance of innovations in this system.
