Summary/Abstract: In this presentation I intend to present analysis of describing of epic heroes and their foes in some Slavonic and Turkic oral epic traditions. The epic lexicon arsenal contains multitude forms of verbal description of the epic heroes and their antagonists. One of the types of description of the characters (protagonists and antagonists) represents the common system for selected epic traditions. Unlike “our” heroes, monsters are described by means of the ordinary/everyday language. Lexical range (‘agricultural tools’, ‘dishware’, ‘truck crops’ and others), used for the description of the opponent, create some comic effect. Such principle of the image of antagonists allows to assume that the opposition “friend-or-foe” (that is a characteristic feature for the epic genre), is realized through including the opposition of “high” and “low” lexicon. The range of “low” lexicon creates the comic effect that the epic’s antagonists become ridiculous for the audience; and it paradoxically weakens the opposition “friend-or-foe”.
