Summary/Abstract: At the tum of the Jl9th century a new generation of intellectuals appeared in Russia, which could be distinguished with the awareness of its independence and with the pursuit of transformation of the country into a constitutional state. It created and led political parties. There was also a group of country intellectuals hoping for reforms but indolent in action. It was impossible to achieve them in a peaceful way, whereas struggle seemed too hard for that social group. The new intellectuals were a valuable potential for Russia, advocating freedom of speech and conviction, which was extremely dangerous for the authorities. Anton Chekhov was their viewer, chronicler and critic.
