Summary/Abstract: This article presents an analysis of eight distinct phases of UN peacekeeping history. The author contends that since its creation more than half-a-century ago, the history of UN peacekeeping is marked by a series of cycles where periods of UN peacekeeping expansion are followed by a sharp reduction in the number of newly initiated peacekeeping operations. Thus far, three such cycles have already been completed and the beginning of the most recent expansion period in mid-1999 might have also marked the beginning of a fourth cycle.
