Summary/Abstract: The author emphasizes an important role an étude plays in pianist education at the beginning of his/her contact with piano keyboard. The history of creation and development of étude as a form and factor conditioning the development of piano playing skills and techniques is connected with the development of keyboard instruments and piano mechanisms. The development of the 19th century piano playing has an important influence on different types of études on an outstandingly didactic character (études by M. Clementi and K. Czerny) and virtuoso études demanding great instrumental skills from the performer (études by F. Liszt). These are accompanied by etudes, the artistic expression of which compares to the most outstanding music works (études by F. Chopin). The influence of Chopin’s composing art on his followers results in the whole series of études-poems, works going far beyond the sphere of works exclusively devoted to schooling. The curricula for teachers of primary and secondary music schools as well as general music schools contain a range of suggestions of the collections of études by different composers, which helps the pedagogues in choosing the right type of études for their students.
