Summary/Abstract: Dutch paintings of the 17th century, as a photo album, present the presence of a cello in an everyday and festive life of the society at that time. Despite its realistic style, it is often an allegory of symbols with a spiritual, cultural, philosophical or religious message at the same time. The analysis of the appearance, circumstances of usage, interpretation of the content, meanings and symbolism related to the cello many years before the first document proving it, constitutes a valuable source of knowledge on the earliest history of this instrument.
