Summary/Abstract: The medieval župa of Raška was situated in the basin of the Raška river (a tributary of the Ibar), on the broader territory of the present-day town of Novi Pazar. According to historical sources, in the church of the Apostles Peter and Paul was the cathedra of the Bishops of Raška (today Peter's church near Novi Pazar), while next to the church 'the seat' (capital) of the Serbian rulers developed in the time of the first Nemanjićs. This old and reputable bishopric was mentioned in some Byzantine and Serbian sources (a charter of the Emperor Basil II from 1020, Demetrios Chomatianos, the biography of Stefan Nemanja, and so on). It represented the ecclesiastical centre of the Serbian state from the period of the foundation of the Serbian autocephalous archbishopric in the epoch of St Sava. Because of the importance of that centre in the medieval history of the Serbs, the systematic interdisciplinary research of this regions has been conducted for more than 20 years (history, historical geography, historical demography, archaeology, physical anthropology, architecture) (head of the project: J. Kalić).
