Summary/Abstract: Hermitage 85 had been mapped during a survey in late 1980s, but it was not until 2006 that the complex was excavated by a team from PCMA University of Warsaw. Dated to the 5th century, the hermitage is considered to be one of the oldest hermitages from Naqlun (Nekloni). Beside the rooms of clearly residential and household functions, it contained an oratory and a small church. Analysis of the relatively well-preserved walls of the hermitage allowed to divided them into proper walls and wall facings; the latter aimed to protect the soft rock-cut walls against erosion. The key building material was sun-dried brick, though roughly-cut stone was also in use. The use of baked brick and lime mortar although exceptional, is attested in the building.
