Summary/Abstract: The Swede Anders Aslund is a recognized international economist, but this recognition does not quite extend to Sweden. This is at least partly due to the fact that the 56-year-old former diplomat believes that a Russian-type shock therapy would also benefit his homeland. In Sweden, this idea is not as popular as in the United States, from whose perspective it appears that socialism continues to prevail in Europe: the state operates an extensive welfare net and the vast majority of people cling to entitlement-based, inflation-adjusted pensions, even if they impose a burden on the budget and inhibit competitiveness in the age of globalization. Aslund therefore works in America, with the economics doctorate he obtained at Oxford. He teaches at Georgetown University in Washington and works at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Previously he worked literally next door, as director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Before that he was also close by, publishing under the aegis of the Brookings Institution.[…] (Anders Aslund: How Capitalism Was Built: The Transformation of Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia.
