Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to describe and compare the conditions of teaching career initial period and teacher advancement along the entire professional life in several European countries. The analysis refers to state-controlled, compulsory education institutions. The choice of the countries was intended to reflect Europe’s cultural variety and differences in economic development. The on-job qualification phase is described in the first section, as a particular and not commonly practiced transition period between the education phase and professional activity. Depending on the country, the on-job qualification phase requires either a final exam or a successful evaluation report. The next section focuses on entry to the teaching profession, as well as on professional status in terms of contract type and state institutions involved. It also gives an overview of educational authorities and the role of school administration in teacher recruitment procedures. Then, teacher advancement process is examined by indicating its stages in different education systems. The paper presents a detailed description of requirements that a teacher must fulfil to be promoted. Paralelly, a consideration is given to various ways in which the advancement can be performed. In the final section, basing on the above data, a proposal of advancement systematization is formulated. It points out three criteria upon which the process can be classified and gives the examples of countries where described promotion types are put to use.
