Summary/Abstract: With the purpose of explaining the origin of the Romanian's conditional auxiliary verb, A. Philippide has formulated (at the same time with Weigand, but independently from him) the so called volēre theory: lat. volebam + sic > (v)reaş > aş, volebas > (v)reai > ai, volebat > (v)rea > ar etc. This way we can identify the same development of the Romanic analytical verbal constructions for the future and for the conditional, yet with different auxiliary verbs: habēre in the West and volēre in the East.
