Summary/Abstract: The article tries to determine whether eagerness to restore the privileges of the Catholic faith was the main cause of the Confederacy of Bar. Although the movement may be seen as a direct response to the law passed in Poland in 1768, introducing – among other things – wide-ranging religious tolerance, the author proves that the law itself was not actually as important as the fact that it was at that time that the Catholic nobility, who were sovereign in the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth, realised their dependence on the Russian empire. In the light of confederates’ manifestos it becomes rather evident that the main goal of the uprising was to restore independence, and the much desired liberty to decide in the matter of religion should be considered part of this purpose.
