THE ORIGINATION OF A CZECH MODAL PARTICLE JESTLI WITH A VIEW TO GRAMMATICALIZATION THEORY

Summary/Abstract: The article reconstructs the diachronic relations between three functional variants of the function word jestli ‘if/whether’ in spoken Czech. The main point of the empirically grounded analysis is to show the crucial role of context in establishing the emergence of new grammatical patterns.
