Summary/Abstract: In the studies published to this point, plays written by Geno Senečić have not yet been closely examined in the context of folk plays and popular theatre. It is therefore my intention to show how only three of his plays – A Street Case, The Workers’ Block and A Strange Man – can be subsumed under the term of a popular play, while in the rest of his plays popular elements can be traced only to a certain extent. Furthermore, theatre records confirm that in the 1930s Geno Senečić was not only repeatedly and successfully staged, but also dearly loved by the contemporary audience. Given the fact that the unity of a playwright and theatregoers is one of the basic assumptions of popular theatre, one cannot help concluding that Senečić himself represented the very pinnacle of Croatian popular theatre between the two World wars.
