Summary/Abstract: Towards the end of 2004, the Polish Institute of International Affairs had the idea of organizing an international conference on the fiftieth anniversary of the Polish October of 1956, devoted to these events. impact on international relations and their influence on world politics. This initiative met with the encouragement and support of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the conference took place under the ministry.s auspices on 19 October 2006. The idea had been prompted by the fact that this episode on the path to Poland.s recovery of its sovereignty.an episode which affected the course of international events in the second half of the 20th century.still remained a terra incognita of sorts. During the half-century that has passed since these events, they have not been the subject of any scholarly synthesis based on documents and material from diplomatic and party archives; no comprehensive and objective analysis, summarizing our knowledge of the subject and formulating new ideas for future research, has been presented on the significance of the Polish October for international relations. Until recently, the preparation of such a work was made difficult by a whole range of factors, such as, for example, the hermetically sealed archives in the People.s Republic of China.a country whose influence on these events was considerable.1
