Summary/Abstract: The punctuation of 16th and 17th century texts was of an intonation-rhetorical character. The analysis of the typographical shape of selected old Polish printed documents allows one to distinguish between eight basic punctuation marks. They performed an important meta-function: they organized the text, rendered it more coherent and constituted — together with lexical-syntactic markers — a metatextual framework of the written utterance.
