Summary/Abstract: This article examines the functions and structure of the telephone conversations found in the textbooks of Estonian as a foreign language intended for adult beginner learners; the focus is on the openings of the conversations. The collected data includes 56 telephone dialogues taken from six Estonian textbooks published during 1999 to 2009, the comparative data includes 131 everyday and 577 institutional telephone conversations taken from the Tartu University Corpus of Spoken Language.
