Summary/Abstract: Organic production is utilized in almost all Western European countries and the USA. It is practiced increasingly and convincingly occupies new territories in more than one hundred countries worldwide. Since the 90’s, the worldwide production of organic products is steadily increasing. Certified areas are systematically proliferating, not only throughout the world, but also in Bulgaria. The number of consumers seeking healthy, green and uncontaminated production is growing. The regulation of organic production, as well as the imports and exports of such produce, is already clearly regulated and consistent with European requirements. Problems in Bulgaria are more economic in nature, such as the lower government subsidies per hectare that Bulgarian producers are eligible for, including the producers of biological products. However, the potential opportunities to increase the scope of producing organic products are favourable. Organic foods still do not occupy a significant place in the consumer basket of Bulgarians. The main problem is poor awareness of consumers about the benefits of these products and, until recently, the ability to recognize them.
