Summary/Abstract: Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Calderón”, written between 1967 and 73, is inspired by the tragedy of Pedro Calderón de la Barca entitled La vida es sueño (Life Is a Dream). Pasolini’s tragedy deals with very similar issues to Calderón’s play: its leitmotif is the possibility of liberation from the determination of fate. The tragedy happens on a social and oedipal level, which are intertwined, with the power-structures mutually reflecting. Dream, non-remembrance, captivity and the oedipal triangle are the marks of Pasolini’s portrayal of himself as a tragic hero.
