Social stratification and youth subcultures after 1989

Summary/Abstract: The auhtor’s research focuses on the changing group identity of the Punk subculture in Bulgaria shaped by the controversy between old (pre-1989) and new perceptions (post-1989) of the West. The main objective of her research is to capture the identity change in the Punk subculture caused by a period of rapid social change and instability. The author collects data with the methods of participant observation among a group of young and adult Bulgarian Punks. The recent labour migration among her informants, going to Western countries, turned her focus into a comparative study as well. The fieldwork was carried out in Sofia and the London metropolitan area, where part of the respondents reside as migrant workers and change their „ways of life“ once again.
