Summary/Abstract: A small village in the most deprived region of Hungary, inhabited mostly by Roma people showed an extraordinary civil activity. The researchers found 10 Roma civil organizations out of the local Roma minority self-government which triggered them to conduct a field work in the village. The case study that they made, was part of a larger research, led by Julia Szalai, which aimed to understand the process of the modernization and civil development of different kinds of Roma communities. It shows that on the one hand the ambitious local Roma people recognized the new alternative tools of democracy, but on the other hand they used them mainly for their private purposes and not for building civil society in the classical sense. Thus, by applying for grants provided for Roma civil organizations they could obtain new resources in their very critical economic situation. However, the grant-giving foundations and the local government played a crucial role in this process which later contributed to sharp conflicts in the local Roma community and hindered the civil community development among them.
