Summary/Abstract: The only preserved Croatian school drama, Judith, Victrix Holofernes, performed in Croatian in Slavonian colleges between 1667 and 1674, has served as the basis for the exploration of the phenomenon of »school drama« in Croatia. The play has also served as a model and as corroboration of Bakhtin’s claim on the appearance of heteroglossia in periods when the disintegration of dominant conventions is under way. The drama is based on the procedure known as carnivalization. Although, ostensibly, there is in the drama a conventional hierarchy of values and ideals, a variety of opinions and views is in fact at work. Through heteroglossia several levels of reality, the worlds of various ideologies, moral and ethical norms, are interweaving (the biblical couple Holofernes – Judith, the military – pseudobourgeois couple Vagao – Habra, the popular and entertaining Hanswurst – Columbina couple) and mutually relativised. Moreover, according to Bakhtin, »their internal contradictions reveal the social heteroglossia of the surrounding world«.
