Summary/Abstract: The role and function of mythological beings in Croatian fiction for children and youth can be detected on several levels. The reader can identify the characters as actors in various thematic complexes, as more or less individualised beings, as bearers of vague, hidden and symbolic meanings, and finally, as key compositional elements. The relations of these beings with nature are extremely intricate. These relations account for their physical appearance as well as for their intermediary and magic power. In the first two types, the most imaginative are the objects endowed with supernatural power and the power of transformation. The transformations of mythological beings in this type of fiction are the most complex components of their physical nature, but also of their spiritual development. In a variety of ways the mythological characters in this type of prose engage the reader’s attention, while the symbolic aspect of the mythological characters operates on the levels of theme, motif, composition, and characterization.
