Summary/Abstract: German diplomacy is resistant against the use of military power in international relations and it prefers economic instruments. Despite peaceful foreign policy, Germany grew in the last years to the world third-largest arms exporter, only after the USA and Russia. The main export products are tanks, warships and light weaponry. In this paper I will look for sources of this success. This paper has a following structure. In the fi rst section I will discuss the system of the export control in Germany. In the second section I will analyze the consequences of the reconstruction of the arms industry in Germany after World War II, its actual structure and its cooperation with the foreign companies. In the third section I will discuss the main developments in the German arms export. I will end with conclusions. I argue that there are fi ve reasons for the success of the German arms producers on the international market. The fi rst one is restructuring of the arms industry in the 1990s. The second one is the concentration on products in production of which German companies have a competitive advantage. The third one is the export-orientated structure of the German economy as a whole. The fourth one is the support of the government for German companies in their international expansion. The fi fth one is the interest of many developing countries in traditional attributes of power, like warships and tanks.
