Summary/Abstract: “I’ll never forget that taxi driver in Munich, who drove me home from Radio Free Europe headquarters not long after Havel moved into his new residence in the Castle of Prague. As soon as he learned that I was from Czechoslovakia, he began to speak of our president with such passionate enthusiasm that I had to ask: what is it that you like so much about this Havel? His answer was very simple: your president is such a trustworthy person that you can even believe him when he is speaking as a politician.” This telling anecdote was related by Lída Rakušanová, my former mentor at the Czechoslovak section of Radio Free Europe, in her mourning address broadcast on the Czech radio on the day of Havel’s death.
