Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the role of the UN peacekeeping missions after the Cold War. Since then, a shift has occurred from the so-called traditional peacekeeping missions to the so-called multidimensional missions, intended for implementation of comprehensive peace treaties and creation of conditions for a sustainable and permanent peace. The traditional expression ‘peacekeeping’ acquired new contents, i.e. dimensions, with the expressions ‘peacebuilding’, ‘peacemaking’, ‘peace enforcement’, ‘post-conflict peacebuilding’ increasingly gaining importance. Thus today diverse types of peacekeeping missions conduct various complex tasks - from assistance in building sustainable governmental institutions, oversight in respect of human rights, reform of security sector, through disarmament and demobilization, to reintegration of former combatants into normal social flows. It is emphasized that the United Nations recently put significant efforts in strengthening their capacities for management and maintenance of field operations, thus fulfilling their primary task - maintenance of world peace and security.
