Summary/Abstract: The Institute for Scientific Work in Varaždin was established in 1983, with the aim of stimulating scientific research to be conducted and the results thereof to be published in the territory of the north-western Croatia. The Institute organizes scientific congresses and symposia, and it is also active in the publishing domain. The sequence line of the managing directors of the Institute was as follows: Academy members Andre Mohorovičić, Miroslav Šicel, and Stjepan Damjanović (as of 2012). From 1983, when the Institute was established, to 2012, the directors were: Professor Emeritus Dr. Sc. Franjo Ruža, M. Sc. Ivan Grabar, and M. Sc. Eduard Vargović (as of 1994). The Institute cooperates with scientific, cultural, educational, professional and other institutions in the north-western Croatia. Thanks to a richly equipped library and comprehensive other documentation, it is active in the fields of history, archaeology, music, literature, art history, economy, medicine, culture, education, etc. Numerous assistants (more than 400) are responsible for the high-quality operation of the Institute. In 2008, the Institute was awarded the Medallion of the City of Varaždin for its successful work. In the last thirty years of operation, the Institute has achieved outstanding results, primarily regarding the realization of comprehensive scientific, research and publishing projects. After the conclusion of these projects, as a rule Proceedings were published. Particularly important are the following editions: Market Democracy in Croatia – the State and the Perspectives (2000, scientific symposium and the accompanying Proceedings); Creative Potentials in Service of the Socio-Economic and Cultural Development of the North-Western Croatia (2002, scientific symposium and the accompanying Proceedings); 300 Years of the Ursulines in Varaždin (2003, scientific symposium and the accompanying Proceedings); Traffic Connections between Croatia and European Countries in Service of the Socio-Economic and Social Development of the North-Western Croatia (2005, scientific symposium and the accompanying Proceedings); and 800 Years of the Free Royal City of Varaždin 1209–2009 (2009, scientific symposium and the accompanying Proceedings).70 The last three decades were rather active in the publishing domain, so that the Institute published 56 books in total: 23 volumes of the journal Radovi (9 single and 7 double editions); 21 volumes in the sequence Posebna izdanja (Special editions); and 12 volumes in the sequence Pojedinačna izdanja (Single editions).
