Summary/Abstract: The author of this article proposes and grounds the original idea that the Dostoyevsky novel is an icon novel; the article also offers a critique of the two most popular definitions in this respect– „a tragedy novel“ (Vyacheslav Ivanov) and a „polyphonic novel“ (M. Bakhtin). The Dostoyevsky novel is an icon novel because it is constructed on the same principles as icon painting, including reverse perspective, objectivity of depiction and inclusion of the reader. The new synthetic „formula“ of the novel given in this article allows a new interpretation of a number of problems: the main hero in Dostoyevsky’s works, the specificity of the novelist’s artistic thought, the relation between the artist and the thinker Dostoyevsky, etc.
