Summary/Abstract: The author observes the changes in the traditional folk costume worn in the Radomir region and the transition to an urban type of clothing which took place in the first half of the 20th century. An attempt is made to give a very general idea of its specific features and of the changes in the function of clothing, parallel to the disappearance of its traditional form. Two main subperiods are outlined in the development of the traditional garments worn in the Radomir region in the above-mentioned period: 1) the pre-war (1912 - 1918) subperiod, and 2) that extending from the ealy '20s to the middle of the century. A gradual and complete disappearance of the traditional men's costumes was observed during the first subperiod. From the beginning of the century up to the end of its first decade it underwent a process of intense simplification and darkening in colour, while, as a result of the penetration of certain urban elements, a costume consisting of mixed traditional and modern elements was gradually shaping up. The women's costumes, worn by the post-war generation, have a number of changes in the chemise, the sleeveless overdress (called saya) and the supplementary parts; there were also changes in the garments worn under the saya as well as in the outer garments, A decade or two after the men's costumes had changed those of the women also underwent a simplification of the separate parts. The gradual disappearance of these costumes was connected with the ever more tangible influence of the urban elements. The general characterization made shows that the first half of the 20th century can be defined as a period of the dynamic and final disappearance of traditional folk costumes worn in the Radomir region.
