The Function of Examples in the Dictionary of Polish Language Compiled on the Basis of the Works of Piotr Skarga

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the methodology used by Alojzy Osiński in his Dictionary of {Polish language compiled from the works of father Piotr Skarga}. The substance of the research are dictionary entries for the letters C, K and R which are described in terms of their formal structure, content and origin. The object of the study was to establish whether the dictionary in question can be categorized as a dictionary of common language or a specialized one. The author comes to conclusion that the work of Alojzy Osiński does not meet the contemporary requirements of academic lexicography, but at the same time differs significantly from works defined as dictionaries of common language. One may conclude it is rather closer to text books or user-guides which contain instructions how to prepare a good speech or even provide ready-to-use usage examples.
