Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the imaginary register of Ash-Wednesday and tracks the attempts of memory to recapture a plenitudinary past through a re-constellation of archetypes: from the prevalently theriomorphic imagery of corporeal decay to thanatic rites of initiation, understood as stages in a spiritual quest for self-discovery, and governed by an underlying mythical pattern of regeneration.
