Summary/Abstract: Of the surviving body of Greek literature of the Classical period, two dramas portray the fated attack on Thebes by the seven Argive champions: Aeschylus’ Septem, the last (and the only remaining) part of the author’s Labdacid trilogy, and Euripides’ dense, overcrowded and often surprising Phoenissae. This latter’s dependence on the earlier drama remains a well established fact – the play looks back to its illustrious predecessor in much the same manner in which the Electra relates to the Choephorae.
