Summary/Abstract: The first steps undertaken in order to qualify Serbian future experts for international communication within their professional community should start with organizing a new type of ESP courses at the university level. These courses ought to be designed to suit the needs of the modern society which nowadays appreciates the communicative skills almost as much as professional ones. Thus, the paper advocates the use of the communicative approach in ESP courses, which has proved to be adequate for developing communicative skills in teaching English for general purposes. This approach has to be modified and adapted to suit the objectives of ESP courses, which, besides teaching professional terminology, should also include the teaching activities aimed at developing students’ communicative competence (linguistic, oral, sociolinguistic and strategic).
