Summary/Abstract: Learning LSP at university level has its justification in specific, disciplineoriented language knowledge and skills developed within a carefully planned and designed curriculum. The importance of LSP course content selection is crucial. An adequate reading syllabus design includes teaching reading for specific purposes: reading for specific assignment oriented information, reading for studying etc. Text is no longer an end in itself, but a means of acquiring knowledge. When it comes to LSP and academic texts, developing reading skills means enhancing cognitive and metacognitive abilities such as prediction, guessing, inferencing, hypothesizing. This paper examines some relevant issues involved in teaching academic and LSP reading and vocabulary development at tertiary level. Finally, some examples of activities easily implemented in any classroom are offered.
