Summary/Abstract: The emergence of Tajikistan on the soil of Central Asia in 1990s made possible the transition of economy from closed to market driven one. The transition brought various challenges for the Tajik society as the state led packages from cradle to grave have collapsed with the fall of USSR. The transition from a Soviet planned to a market economy, and from social engineering under a totalitarian regime to an open democratic civil society have led to the revival of tradition with a negative impact on women’s status and generated an increase in domestic and social violence. The weak and fragile state has not proved up to the expectation of women, which has created developmental gap filled by none other than NGOs. The paper is an attempt to analyze the role of NGOs in the development of Tajik women as she found alternative voice in these NGOs, which are proving helpful in number of aspects such as protection from domestic violence, education, health sector etc. The paper has thrown light on some affected areas of women, which NGOs have brought to the fore.
