Summary/Abstract: Considerations of art history and history of music in particular, show that the greatest pieces were in most cases made “by accident”. The masterpieces that would forever resound across continents were composed in most different situations possible: in bars, former taverns, in the streets, as fruits of some unrequited love… However, the grand masters of music found their inspiration for a considerable number of pieces in nature, and birds held a special attraction for them. Following Jean Philippe Rameau, Saint-Saëns, Respighi, Rimsky-Korsakov and Stravinsky, did Olivier Messiaen go a step further with his masterpiece “Exotic Birds”? Was it that his perennial thorough study of birds actually distanced him from music, or that he managed to put exotic birds into the rational “cage” of the elements?
