Summary/Abstract: Pál Gyulai is the greatest, determining figure of nineteenth-century literary criticism. The study focuses on the notion of nation in the nineteenth century, and the joining of this notion to the enlightening program concerning the whole mankind, building on cultural diversity, and on the basis of this he analyses Gyulai’s ideas about popular-national literature: “as we may read at Gyulai, the individual is a patriot (for he serves his homeland), the nation is a cosmopolite (for it serves mankind)”.
