Summary/Abstract: The rank of archpriest was a fundamental Church institution, as it linked the centre (the Bishopric) with the periphery (the parishes). Archpriests were extremely influential in their subordinate parishes. They had clear tasks, such as visiting their parishes, managing Church incomes, taking part in the election of the Metropolitan Bishop and in synods. Archpriests also coordinated worship, administration and social activities from their districts. They were appointed by the Metropolitan Bishop or after an open competition. In their work, archpriests were guided by their own beliefs and by their own interpretation of orders from above, as well as by likings and dislikes. The documents of the time reveal a lively, colorful world.
