The Unfolding of Sobornost in the Philosophy of Nikolai Berdiaev

Summary/Abstract: In his works Nikolai Berdiaev uses the language of symbols for the expression of the intuitive experience of being. The author of this article aims to reveal the irrational elements of Berdiaev's notion of the world by applying the hermeneutic method. One of the main symbols of Russian culture and philosophy, namely sobornost, is analysed, seeking to explain its various meanings. In the semantic field of this symbol, the author analyses the metaphysical, gnoseological ideas and the ideas of the philosophy of culture of the philosopher. It is concluded in the article that sobornost in the works of Berdiaev could be interpreted as a concentration of spiritual, physical and vital powers of the person for the formation of the culture of the world and the realisation of the eschatological goal of history.
