Summary/Abstract: The paper shows results of dialectological studies carried out in summer 2007 in villages situated directly on the border with Belarus and spreading to the north from Bujwidz up to Nowe Święciany. The paper raises issues connected with ethnical self-definition of the inhabitants of these areas and their attitude towards the Polish language and the influence of national identity on the retention of dialect and on its development. The second part of the paper is devoted to the way Polish functions in the conditions of multilingialism. On the basis of the thematic field: {buildings, their parts and surroundings} the paper shows: i) the lexical content of the dialect, ii)ranges of the usage of etymologically varied dialectal vocabulary, iii) means for word classifiaction whose aim is to detect regional specificity of word evaluation which leads to the retention or extinction of particular lexemes. The study is an attempt to reconstruct the linguistic image of the inhabitants of the above-mentioned areas through the description of lexis which is based on particular connotation fields.
