Summary/Abstract: The article brings attention to the hierarchized multidimensionality of inflectional paradigm variability. The term ‘morphological alternations’ introduced by R. Laskowski to describe stem inflection in some nominals (such as collective numerals and nouns like {cielę} (calf) and ramię (arm)) was compared with morphonological alternations, stem extension and suppletivism. The author discusses alternative structuralization of contemporary inflectional forms (on the basis of the above-mentioned categories) and at the same time evaluates their compatibility with the principle of diachronics as well as the significance (applicability) of the idea of commensuration between synchronic descriptions and historical facts. The article demonstrates internal diversification of morphological alternations due to features such as range (frequency) of use, alternant distribution in the nominal paradigm, (phonological) similarity to morphonological alternations, competitiveness to stem extension, type of morpheme in which they occur (lexical or word-forming), and last but not least, partial homonymy of morphological alternants. The author also notes the (undesirable) involvement of some morphological alternations in word formation.
